New Driving Permit System Launched in Punjab for Teen Riders
The Punjab government has rolled out a structured juvenile driving permit framework aimed at regulating and legalizing motorcycle usage among young riders aged 16 to 18 across the province. This newly introduced system is designed to bring underage riders into a formal legal category while strengthening road safety and traffic discipline on busy urban and rural routes. According to DIG Traffic Waqas Nazir, the Punjab Traffic Police will begin issuing these special permits from this week onward. Under the policy guidelines, eligible teens will be permitted to ride motorcycles and scooters with engine capacities not exceeding 125cc, ensuring controlled and safer mobility for younger commuters. The permit comes with an annual fee of Rs. 500, and applicants must hold either a Smart National Identity Card (SNIC) or a B-Form. In addition, written approval from parents or legal guardians is mandatory to complete the application process. Authorities have also made it compulsory for candidates to pass both a traffic sign knowledge test and a practical riding assessment to ensure competency on the road. Officials stress that strict compliance with traffic regulations will be enforced, and any violation could result in suspension or cancellation of the permit. The initiative is seen as a step toward reducing unlicensed riding and promoting responsible driving habits among youth.
