Big Update: HEC Launches Revised Computing Curriculum for Pakistani Universities
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has unveiled a newly revised computing curriculum designed to transform university-level education in Pakistan by aligning academic learning with modern industry requirements and emerging digital technologies. The updated framework was formally introduced by HEC Chairman Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar at the British Council’s “Partnership for Future Skills and Employment” event, organized under the European Union TVET Sector Support Program at the National Incubation Centre in Islamabad. The event was attended by key HEC officials including Dr Muhammad Ali Nasir from the Research and Innovation Division, Engr. Waheed Ahmed Mangi, Head of Academics, and Hidayatullah Kasi, Deputy Director Curriculum. During the presentation, Dr Nasir highlighted that the curriculum was developed through extensive collaboration with academia, industry leaders, accreditation bodies, government institutions such as the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication, PSEB, P@SHA, and the National Computing Education Accreditation Council, ensuring a balanced and future-ready academic structure. Aligned with the Undergraduate Education Policy 2023, the revised program introduces a competency-based learning approach and offers 14 specialized tracks including Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, Robotics, Internet of Things, and Quantum Computing. It also emphasizes internships, industry certifications, and capstone projects to enhance practical exposure. Officials stated that these reforms aim to significantly improve employability, strengthen academia-industry collaboration, and prepare globally competitive graduates for Pakistan’s rapidly evolving digital economy. The initiative is expected to reshape computing education nationwide and support long-term technological growth and innovation in the country.
