Pakistan Universities to Introduce Compulsory AI Course Under HEC Directive

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has taken a landmark step by approving a compulsory 3-credit-hour course on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for university students nationwide, signaling a major shift toward modern, tech-oriented education. The course, officially titled “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence,” will now become a part of relevant undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in public-sector universities under newly issued academic guidelines. Authorities confirmed that this decision was finalized during a high-level consultative session involving vice chancellors from across the country, with the core objective of preparing students for an increasingly digital and automated future. Universities have been directed to begin curriculum integration without delay, with a phased rollout planned across multiple disciplines. To facilitate smooth implementation, the Information Technology University has designed three structured course modules, which were reviewed and approved in the 45th HEC meeting and subsequently distributed to institutions for adoption. Additionally, formal instructions have been dispatched to public universities in Punjab to accelerate inclusion of AI education in academic frameworks. Education experts believe this initiative will enhance students’ understanding of machine learning, data science, and real-world AI applications, aligning Pakistan’s higher education system with global technological trends. Officials further emphasized that this reform aims to strengthen digital literacy, boost innovation, and produce a workforce capable of thriving in the evolving global economy.
