China Unveils New Tech to Turn Coal into Clean Energy
Chinese scientists have introduced a groundbreaking way to generate electricity from coal without burning it, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional power generation. The innovation is based on a direct coal fuel cell that uses an electrochemical reaction instead of combustion, significantly reducing pollution and eliminating the usual carbon emissions linked with coal use. In this system, coal is carefully processed into a fine, purified form and then fed into a specialized chamber where it reacts with oxygen through an advanced membrane. This reaction produces electricity instantly, removing the need for steam, turbines, and other energy-wasting steps found in conventional plants. One of the most promising aspects of this technology is its ability to capture carbon dioxide at the source and convert it into useful materials, making the process more sustainable. Researchers believe this method can achieve higher efficiency compared to traditional coal power, which is limited by heat-based energy conversion. The development could also allow electricity to be generated directly from underground coal reserves, reducing mining impact. While still in development, this innovation signals a major shift toward cleaner energy solutions using existing resources.
