No Smoking Zones: Punjab Enforces Ban in Educational Institutions
Punjab is intensifying its efforts to curb tobacco use by reinforcing smoking restrictions across educational institutions and public spaces. Marking World No Tobacco Day, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that smoking in government offices, public transport, and other designated areas remains a punishable offence, with authorities directed to ensure strict compliance. The government is also focusing on protecting younger generations from the growing trend of smoking and vaping through awareness campaigns and preventive measures. Health experts highlighted the alarming global rise in tobacco consumption among teenagers, warning that both traditional cigarettes and electronic nicotine products pose serious health risks. They stressed that vaping can often become a gateway to regular smoking, particularly among youth. Medical professionals further noted that tobacco use not only affects public health but also places a significant financial burden on societies through healthcare costs and productivity losses. Officials and health advocates alike called for collective action from parents, educators, communities, and policymakers to build a healthier future and reduce tobacco-related harm among children and young adults.
