Punjab Schools May Close Earlier Than Expected Amid Heatwave Alert

The Government of Punjab is likely to announce early summer vacations for schools and colleges as temperatures continue to rise sharply across the province. According to Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, authorities are currently reviewing a proposal to begin vacations from May 22, with educational institutions expected to reopen on August 2. The minister stated that a final decision will be made on May 11 after detailed consultations with relevant departments and an assessment of the latest weather forecasts. Officials are also discussing plans to organize optional summer camps during the holiday period for students interested in extracurricular and learning activities. The move comes after the Punjab Disaster Management Authority issued a weather advisory warning of above-normal temperatures and possible heatwave conditions during the coming months. Experts have cautioned that several plain areas of Punjab may experience severe heat intensity throughout May, June, and July, increasing health risks for students and staff. Last year, prolonged extreme weather also forced authorities to extend summer vacations beyond the original schedule to ensure student safety across the province.
