New Punjab Policy Aims to Equip Students with AI Knowledge

Punjab has officially launched a comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) curriculum, aimed at equipping students with vital digital skills and preparing them for the fast-evolving technological landscape. The initiative, introduced by the Punjab Education, Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA), aligns with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision of early digital education integration. CEO Muhammad Musa Ali Bokhari presented the curriculum draft to the provincial education minister and parliamentary secretary, highlighting its structured approach from basic computing to advanced topics like data science, machine learning, robotics, and ethical AI. The framework follows international standards while addressing local educational needs, emphasizing creativity, problem-solving, responsible digital citizenship, and governance. The program is designed to encourage practical application, innovation, and adaptability among students, moving beyond mere technology use. From grades six to eight, essential AI concepts have been newly integrated, while grades nine to twelve will see strengthened competencies and updated content. Officials noted a significant teacher shortfall, with only 3,050 IT educators available against a requirement of 10,605, alongside Rs7.25 billion needed for lab upgrades, infrastructure, and online AI facilities. This ambitious initiative marks a major step toward making Punjab a hub for future-ready digital talent.
