IT Minister Under Fire as Right of Way Bill Sparks Political Storm

Veteran journalist Najam Sethi has openly demanded the dismissal of Federal IT and Telecommunication Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja following mounting controversy surrounding the Pakistan Telecommunication Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2026, which has drawn sharp criticism from media figures, legal experts, and civil society voices. The proposed legislation became highly contentious after journalist Rauf Klasra exposed clauses suggesting telecom operators could be granted sweeping authority to access private land for installing towers and infrastructure, triggering widespread concern over property rights and state overreach. In response to the backlash, the bill reportedly stalled and faced increased parliamentary and public scrutiny. Speaking in a televised discussion, Sethi condemned the draft law and questioned its intent, stating he would resist any attempt to permit corporate access to personal property under such terms. He expressed particular disappointment with Shaza Fatima Khawaja, describing her as educated and competent yet shocked by her association with the proposal. Sethi further praised Rauf Klasra for igniting public awareness and urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to consider removing the minister. Meanwhile, Klasra has alleged deeper involvement by senior officials within the IT Ministry and raised concerns about transparency in the drafting and approval process of the controversial legislation.
