Public Transport in Punjab Gets QR Emergency Alert System

Punjab has officially introduced a QR-based emergency alert system designed to enhance safety across its entire public transport network, including buses, vans, taxis, and rickshaws operating throughout the province. The initiative, developed internally by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority under the Digital Punjab program led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has been implemented without imposing any additional financial burden on the provincial budget. Through the Public Safety App and official digital platform, passengers can access the service free of cost. The system integrates multiple security functions such as emergency voice and video calling, live chat support, GPS location sharing, vehicle verification, and direct coordination with law enforcement response units. By scanning a QR code at the beginning of a trip, users can instantly view verified details of the vehicle, driver, and ownership, which can also be shared with trusted contacts for added protection. In emergencies, the system automatically transmits live location data to the PSCA control center, enabling rapid police response. Officials stated that even drivers can use the feature to request urgent assistance. Authorities and PSCA leadership described the initiative as a major step toward building a digitally connected and safer transport ecosystem across Punjab.
