Pakistani Tech Talent Shines as NUST Students Build Robotic Underwater Snake

In a remarkable leap for Pakistan’s robotics landscape, students at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Karachi Campus, have engineered a bio-inspired underwater snake robot modeled after the fluid motion of the yellow-bellied sea snake (Hydrophis platurus), one of the ocean’s most agile swimmers. The pioneering project was created by undergraduate innovators Hamza Imdad, Qazi Khizar Ali, and Hamza Hassan under the academic mentorship of Dr. Khurram Kamal at NUST’s Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC). This breakthrough represents a major advancement in marine robotics research within the country. The team achieved a global first by conducting detailed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of sea snake locomotion and integrating the results with sophisticated motion control systems, buoyancy optimization techniques, and structural design simulations. The resulting robotic system replicates the snake’s natural propulsion, allowing highly efficient movement, enhanced stability, and superior maneuverability in underwater environments. Experts suggest the technology could be transformative for deep-sea exploration, marine ecosystem monitoring, environmental data collection, and defense applications. The university emphasized that this innovation reflects Pakistan’s growing expertise in robotics and artificial intelligence-driven engineering. Moving forward, the researchers aim to upgrade the system with autonomous navigation, smart decision-making algorithms, and real-world operational capabilities, positioning it for advanced underwater missions and global research contributions.
