Punjab Government Unveils First Local AI Technology Initiative
The Government of Punjab has approved a major digital transformation initiative by launching its first local artificial intelligence platform through a government-backed GPU cloud project. This development marks a significant step toward building indigenous AI capabilities for both administrative and academic use within the province. According to officials, the platform will support the training and hosting of large language models locally, including full Urdu language integration, while also providing secure AI sandboxes for government departments, universities, and research institutions. Early trials of voice-based interfaces and intelligent search systems have already shown promising results. Authorities highlighted that reliance on foreign cloud services previously raised concerns regarding sensitive data security, which the new infrastructure aims to address. The project is also designed to overcome long-standing GPU shortages that had slowed AI development in the region. With a population of over 130 million citizens and a vast public sector workforce, Punjab sees this platform as a foundation for digital governance and innovation. Additionally, the province is planning satellite internet services to expand connectivity in remote areas and connect millions of young people with modern technology tools over the coming years.
