New SMPRA Authority in Pakistan Moves Toward Stricter Online Content Laws
Pakistan has stepped into a new phase of digital governance with the launch of the Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority (SMPRA), which has begun preparing a comprehensive set of rules to monitor online platforms. Formed under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), this body is designed to bring social media networks under a clearer legal and ethical framework. The initiative aims to curb rising concerns such as misinformation, online harassment, extremist narratives, and content that promotes violence. Authorities are focusing on building a safer online environment by introducing firm moderation guidelines and ensuring that harmful material is removed without delay. As part of this shift, global social media companies may be required to establish a local presence in Pakistan and comply strictly with national regulations. Plans are also underway to introduce an accessible complaint system, allowing users to report violations more efficiently. Led by Ayaz Shaukat, SMPRA will work alongside the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to strengthen cybersecurity and digital oversight. The upcoming regulations are expected to redefine how online platforms operate within Pakistan.
