Major Delays and Cancellations Hit US AI Data Center Plans for 2026

Between one-third and one-half of planned US data centers for 2026 are facing delays or outright cancellation, according to reports. This includes high-profile projects like OpenAI’s ambitious Stargate initiative (valued at up to $500 billion), with progress stalling in Texas amid supply chain issues, power constraints, and location challenges. Only about 5GW of the projected 12-16GW capacity is currently under construction.

Details: Bottlenecks stem from electrical equipment shortages, regulatory hurdles, and reliance on imports (including from China). Hyperscale’s like Meta, Google, and Microsoft continue massive capex, but real-world buildouts are lagging behind announcements.

Impact: This slowdown tempers the explosive AI infrastructure boom, potentially delaying model training and deployment timelines. It underscores risks in the “AI factory” race, including energy demands and geopolitical supply chain vulnerabilities. For the industry, it may lead to higher costs, shifts toward more efficient models, or increased reliance on cloud providers like CoreWeave. In regions like South Asia (including Pakistan), it could open doors for alternative data center or talent opportunities if global diversification accelerates.
