From Waste to Power: KP Govt Announces New Energy Project
The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has taken a major step toward sustainable development by approving a large-scale waste-to-fuel project in Peshawar. Sanctioned by the Public Private Partnership Committee, the initiative aims to transform municipal waste into Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) using modern processing technologies. This innovative approach is expected to support the local cement industry by providing an alternative to imported coal, ultimately reducing costs and strengthening energy security. Officials emphasize that the project will also help address the growing challenge of waste management by significantly decreasing the burden on landfill sites, particularly at the Shamshto Landfill Site, where dedicated material recovery and processing facilities are planned. Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative is likely to create new employment opportunities and promote cleaner urban living conditions. By integrating advanced waste conversion systems with public-private collaboration, the provincial government is positioning itself at the forefront of green innovation in Pakistan. The project reflects a long-term vision to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility while paving the way for a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
