Pakistan is preparing to enter a new era of digital connectivity as the government moves forward with the rollout of 5G mobile services, with pilot testing expected to begin in major cities next week. According to officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the development follows the successful completion of a nationwide 5G spectrum auction in which nearly 480 MHz of spectrum was sold for approximately $507 million, signaling strong investment in the country’s telecommunications sector. The initial phase of the rollout will focus on major urban centers including Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore, where demand for high-speed internet and advanced digital services is rapidly increasing. Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the progress reflects the government’s commitment under the leadership of Shehbaz Sharif to modernize the country’s digital infrastructure. Speaking during discussions around the Mobile World Congress, she noted that Pakistan has significantly expanded available telecom spectrum, strengthening the foundation for next-generation connectivity. Officials believe 5G will enable faster internet speeds, boost innovation, and accelerate Pakistan’s digital economy in the coming years.
