GitHub Introduces New AI Features and Security Updates

GitHub, the popular developer platform owned by Microsoft, has announced several major updates to its AI coding assistant Copilot, along with security improvements aimed at strengthening the open-source ecosystem.

One of the biggest updates is the expansion of GitHub Copilot’s AI coding agent, which now supports automated code review and improved integration with development tools. Developers can receive AI-powered suggestions, automated bug detection, and even complete pull-request assistance directly from the command line or integrated development environments.

GitHub has also introduced new agent-based capabilities in Copilot, allowing developers to customize AI agents that can help automate programming workflows and collaborate with specialized coding assistants.

However, recent reports highlight security concerns as well. Cybersecurity researchers revealed a supply-chain attack using invisible code, which targeted repositories hosted on GitHub and other platforms. The technique uses hidden Unicode characters that are difficult for humans to detect but can manipulate software behavior.

Meanwhile, GitHub has updated its Copilot plan for students, changing the available AI models under the GitHub Education program. The company says the new plan will support a more sustainable AI learning environment for students and developers.

Experts say these updates show how AI-powered development tools are rapidly transforming the software industry, making coding faster while also raising new security challenges for open-source platforms.
