Nearly Half of Planned 2026 US AI Data Centers Face Delays or Cancellations

Analysts report that 30–50% of US AI data center projects targeted for 2026 are likely to be delayed or canceled outright. Of the planned 12–16GW capacity, only about 5GW is currently under active construction, with major bottlenecks in electrical infrastructure (transformers, switchgear) — much of it sourced from China — plus power grid constraints and regulatory issues.

Details: High-profile efforts, including elements of OpenAI’s Stargate project, are affected. Community resistance over energy use, water consumption, and environmental impact is also growing, with some states considering restrictions.

Impact: This infrastructure reality check tempers AI hype, potentially increasing costs for GPUs, memory, and consumer electronics while pushing companies toward efficiency gains, edge computing, or alternative locations (including space-based ideas). It exposes geopolitical supply chain vulnerabilities. For South Asia, including Pakistan’s IT sector, it could open doors for diversified compute hubs, talent export in AI efficiency, or regional infrastructure partnerships.
