Cybersecurity Warning: NCERT Highlights Supply Chain Vulnerabilities

The National Computer Emergency Response Team (NCERT) has issued a critical advisory highlighting the growing danger of supply chain cyberattacks targeting national infrastructure. According to NCERT, cybercriminals and state-sponsored actors are no longer just hacking networks—they are infiltrating trusted vendors, compromising hardware and software during manufacturing or distribution stages. This shift exposes vital sectors such as power grids, banking systems, healthcare services, and defense operations to large-scale disruption even before systems are deployed. The advisory warns that weak security in development environments and logistics chains could lead to hidden backdoors, covert surveillance, and systemic failures across interconnected systems. Drawing lessons from incidents like the Stuxnet cyberattack, NCERT emphasized how sophisticated attacks can silently cripple critical infrastructure. Organizations are urged to adopt strict verification measures, including hardware inspections, sandbox testing of software updates, and enhanced vendor transparency. Immediate actions such as auditing supply chains and monitoring unusual network activity have also been recommended to mitigate risks and protect national security.
